Today we are introducing Climate Leader Olivia Karp
My Journey into The Climate Space and Advocacy
My engagement with the climate sector commenced when I first encountered the concept of “Climate Mobility.” Climate mobility refers to the movement of people prompted by the effects of climate change, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, and other environmental events. Upon discovering this term, I undertook further research, consulting academic literature, reputable online sources, and engaging in discussions with my colleagues to deepen my understanding. I witnessed the tangible impacts of climate change in my community in 2013, when Canada experienced a severe ice storm that destroyed many homes, displaced residents, and left some without power. Additional examples include the wildfires that have affected my country and the flooding resulting from extreme weather events. With Canada being imapacted by climate inspired me to be actively involved in climate change advocacy.
Following the completion of my Master’s degree in International Public Policy, I undertook a fellowship with Global Affairs Canada, during which I examined the effects of climate mobility on individuals relocating between the United States and Canada, particularly in the Great Lakes region. Notably, the study revealed that sea-level rise and biodiversity loss have rendered certain areas unsustainable, prompting significant migration. This experience further propelled my involvement in climate mobility advocacy, including participation in the Youth Constituency climate mobility team under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), known as YOUNGO, as well as the Migration Youth and Children Platform (MYCP). I have had the privilege of organizing social media campaigns, drafting policy papers, and coordinating events for major climate conferences, including COPs and SBs, to educate others about climate mobility. My advocacy efforts have been continually inspired by numerous climate advocates who are actively addressing these critical issues. There is no singular path to becoming engaged in the climate sector; individuals may be motivated by personal interest or the desire to contribute to a broader movement. It is important to recognize that embarking on a journey in the climate sector or any other area requires dedication and perseverance. Starting points may include conducting online research, engaging in conversations, or simply exploring available opportunities. While the desire to contribute is widespread, taking the first step can be challenging, making initial exploration an effective way to begin.
Throughout these experiences and through the individuals I have encountered on my climate journey, I have continually acquired new knowledge and developed valuable skills. One of the most rewarding aspects of engagement in any field is the opportunity for ongoing learning and personal growth. Advocacy, in particular, is an extended process of education and relationship building, exposing participants to diverse perspectives and opportunities within the sector.
Keep up the amazing work that you do!
